About our guest

Pablo Mis is the Program Director of the Maya Leaders Alliance, an organization led by the traditional leaders of 39 Maya communities that advocate for customary land rights in southern Belize. The alliance’s litigation strategies led to the historic Belize Supreme Court decision of 2010 that affirmed that the Maya people have customary rights to land under the Constitution. Pablo is Maya Q’eqchi’ and lives in the Laguna Village in the Toledo District of Belize. Pablo has represented the Maya people at the United Nations and was appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations to serve on the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Indigenous Peoples’ (UNVFIP) Board of Trustees. Pablo was influential in the formation of the Caribbean Network of Indigenous and Tribal Peoples to raise the voices of Indigenous peoples on a regional level. Today, he continues to build the resilience of the Maya people by promoting Indigenous grassroots development through legal land right protections and other forms of advocacy.
