Nature for Climate and Development

Nature underpins half of the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, either partially or wholly. From sustaining jobs and livelihoods, to providing food and water security, to helping us mitigate and adapt to climate change, and to providing fuel and medicine - nature is critical for humanity’s survival.

#NatureBasedsolutionsas defined by IUCN include “actions to protect, sustainably manage, and restore natural and modified ecosystems that address societal challenges effectively and adaptively, simultaneously benefiting people and nature.” This hashtag calls for increased use of nature as efficient and effective approaches to solving many of the world’s challenges by working with nature.
vertical-align: middle;
Many organizations are advocating for nature-based solutions, including IUCN’s work on providing practical guides for implementing nature-based solutions, the Nature-Based Solutions Initiative, which summarizes recent news and provides policy support; the United Nations Environment Programme, which supports nature-based solutions for climate, and the Small Grants Programme and the Equator Initiative, which work on identifying and supporting community-led nature-based solutions.

Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of nature-based solutions include:
  • Advocate for nature-based solutions for pressing challenges in your region, including for safeguarding water supplies, protecting cities from climate-related disasters, and sequestering carbon dioxide.
  • Take an e-learning course on nature-based solutions and share what you learn.
  • Join the conversation on social media by encouraging the use of #NatureBasedSolutions to achieve our climate and sustainable development goals.

#Nature4Climate is a hashtag that highlights the profound importance of nature in achieving our climate goals. Nature - in the form of forests, wetlands, mangroves and other ecosystems - can sequester up to a third of the world’s greenhouse gasses, and is essential for mitigating floods, storms, drought and heat waves.
vertical-align: middle;
Nature4Climate is a consortium of organizations around the world dedicated in a joint effort to drive investment in, and action on, nature-based solutions to tackle our climate emergency. Its policy tracker is a global database of public policies to support nature-based solutions, and its briefing room provides an overview of key nature-related events at the Climate Conference of Parties. Many organizations promote nature-based climate solutions, including The Nature Conservancy, the World Business Council on Sustainable Development, Conservation International among many others. Numerous groups, such the Wildlife Conservation Society and Standing Trees, are advocating for protecting intact, mature forests as critical climate solutions.

Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of nature for climate include:
  • Share your story of how nature is helping your community mitigate and adapt to climate change.
  • Encourage your local government to invest in nature to tackle climate change.
  • Encourage your government to protect intact, mature forests.

#NatureForLife is a hashtag that celebrates the value of nature in achieving sustainable development goals, and sustaining all life on earth, and that recognizes that we cannot achieve the Sustainable Development Goals without putting nature at the heart of development.
vertical-align: middle;
The Nature for Life Hub provides hundreds of resources for discovery on the different dimensions of the role nature plays in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Many groups have shown the linkages between nature and the Sustainable Development Goals, such as the World Wide Fund for Nature, and Conservation International and the United Nations Environment Programme makes a strong case for putting nature at the heart of sustainable development.
vertical-align: middle;
Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of nature for climate include:
  • Share what you discover on the Nature for Life Hub with others - you could even design an entire curriculum around many of the resources.
  • Join the conversation on social media by sharing and tagging videos and resources that you find on the #NatureForLife Hub.

vertical-align: middle;
#NatureForWater is a hashtag that acknowledges the key role that ecosystems play in maintaining water security around the world, especially for cities around the world.
vertical-align: middle;
A brief report summarizes how nature underpins water security around the world, and another report summarizes the role of forest protected areas in securing water for cities, and a montage of photo essays show the value of nature for water. The Nature For Water Facility, led by The Nature Conservancy, helps watershed investment programs such as local utilities, government agencies and NGOs reach their technical objectives by providing gold-standard technical assistance. The Nature Conservancy also has in-depth information on how forests provide drinking water around the world, and UNESCO has an in-depth report on nature-based solutions for water.
vertical-align: middle;
Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of nature for water include:
  • Understand your watershed, and where your water comes from by taking the watershed journey.
  • Join the conversation on social media by encouraging the protection and restoration of #NatureForWater.

ForHealth

vertical-align: middle;
#NatureForHealth is a hashtag that highlights the profound role that nature plays in sustaining human health, including by providing medicinal plants - 4 out of 5 people depend on medicinal plants for their health. Furthermore, intact ecosystems help prevent the next pandemic.
vertical-align: middle;
The Convention on Biological Diversity’s “Biodiversity and Health” site is a one-stop site for learning about the linkages between biodiversity and health. The World Health Organization has published a brief report on the linkages between health and biodiversity. ‘Forest bathing’ has recently been identified as having significant health benefits, especially for those living in urban settings with minimal exposure to nature.
vertical-align: middle;
Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of nature for health include:
  • Take stock of your own context, and reflect on how nature contributes to your own health.
  • Join the conversation on social media by encouraging the protection and restoration of #NatureForHealth.

vertical-align: middle;
#LandRightsNow is a hashtag highlighting the need to recognize Indigenous rights to their lands and territories when considering nature-based solutions. It is a recognition that many Indigenous peoples and local communities around the world struggle to defend their rights to their lands and territories, and that we cannot achieve our planetary goals on nature and climate without first recognizing these rights.
vertical-align: middle;
Indigenous peoples and local communities manage more than a third of the world’s land, but have legal access to less than 10%. A recent study by WWF explores the issue of the importance of safeguarding Indigenous and local rights. Many groups around the world advocate for safeguarding the rights of Indigenous peoples to their lands and territories, including the Tenure Facility, Rights and Resources, Nia Tero, and the Climate and Land Use Alliance, among others.
vertical-align: middle;
Ways you can join the conversation on the importance of securing #LandRightsNow for Indigenous peoples and local communities include:
  • Join the campaign to bring visibility to Indigenous women advocating for land rights.
  • Support the ongoing campaign to protect the Maasai people of Loliondo, Tanzania from eviction.
