The concept of protected areas has evolved over time, and continues to evolve, as society places new expectations and demands on them. Protected areas are now expected to provide a variety of functions, from enabling humans and nature to adapt to climate change impacts, to sustaining traditional livelihoods, to maintaining the flow of ecosystem services to communities.
As a result, the notion of participation within protected areas is also evolving. If protected areas are to serve these new functions, it will be necessary to involve new stakeholders in new ways, and to provide them with a more meaningful, substantial role in decision making.
The objective of this module is to provide you with an overview of the process for engaging protected area stakeholders in participatory processes.
