Oceans are critical to life on earth. They help to regulate the climate by providing a carbon sink, they are home to the world’s vast array of fisheries and therefore provide a major source of food to the world, and they are home to an enormous diversity of species and ecosystems. Today, oceans are under unprecedented peril, facing a broad array of threats. Even though there have been some important recent developments in marine protection, protection of the marine environment has not kept up with protection of the terrestrial environment. This is largely because marine protection involves a greater complexity of economic, social and political issues.
The goal of this module is to show how the CBD Programme of Work on Protected Areas applies in a marine environment, and to enable protected area planners to take appropriate steps to increase marine protection, improve the marine protected area (MPA) network, and reduce threats to the marine environment.
