Introduction
Developed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), this course is designed to help you improve biodiversity conservation outcomes by promoting gender equality, women’s empowerment, and leadership.
- Lesson 1, Promoting biodiversity conservation through gender equality, introduces you to the central role that women play in biodiversity conservation and sustainable development. You will learn how the concepts of gender equality, women’s empowerment, and leadership are integrated into the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The lesson concludes by exploring the positive impacts of engaging women and women’s groups as agents of change in the planning, monitoring, and reporting of NBSAPs and other biodiversity policies.
- Lesson 2, Entry points for gender-responsive biodiversity decision-making, delves into approaches to more fully engage women alongside men in measures to conserve and sustainably use biodiversity. You will learn practical steps to undertake to plan, monitor, and report on gender-responsive projects, plans, and policy, including the NBSAP.
- Case studies from the Gökova Bay in south-east Türkiye to dry tropical forests in Colombia illustrate how these entry points can also be applied for gender-responsive small-scale conservation and sustainable development projects. The case studies demonstrate how these interventions can have positive impacts on the community, livelihoods, and biodiversity.
This course is designed for policymakers and planners who work on biodiversity policy, including NBSAP planning, monitoring, and reporting. Individuals with an interest in biodiversity conservation, or anyone wishing to learn more about women’s empowerment, gender equality, and biodiversity, are also encouraged to take the course.
