Engaging in COP27: A Training for Indigenous Peoples

In partnership with the Tribal Link Foundation, International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change, and the International Indian Treaty Council, the Forest Declaration Platform hosted a virtual training for Indigenous Peoples attending in the UNFCCC COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh.  

This initiative was co-funded by Germany’s Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and the UK Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs. 

Objectives

The virtual training sought to:

  • Provide historical background of Indigenous Peoples’ engagement with the UNFCCC Conference of Parties (COP)
  • Outline opportunities for engagement at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh
  • Present an overview of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and UNDP’s Climate Promise

Schedule

The virtual training consisted of three presentations, with opportunities for Q&A after each:

  • History of Indigenous Peoples' Engagement and Opportunities to Engage in the UNFCCC: Andrea Carmen, Executive Director, IITC and former Co-Chair, Facilitative Working Group of the Local Community and Indigenous Peoples Platform
  • Entry Points into UNFCCC Negotiations and Agenda for COP27: Graeme Reed, Co-chair, International Indigenous Peoples Forum on Climate Change; Climate Adviser, Assembly of First Na<ons, Canada
  • Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and COP27 101: Sameera Savarala, Programme Specialist, NDCs and Negotiations, UNDP Climate Promise
